Blood Slides

Blood Slides is a project about alienation and existence. Growing up as a first generation Chinese American in a small town, I struggled with my identity. I was unsure of where I fit in and what culture I best connect with. I struggled with who I was supposed to be based on my external appearance, and who I am internally. I never truly feel Chinese, even though I speak the language, practice some of the traditions, and know parts of my history. I am also othered in American society, though I was born here and share similar experiences with my American counterparts.

This project demonstrates that I have multiple identities. Many of us struggle with a similar identity dysphoria, whether it be race, sexuality, religion, or other attributes that make us who we are. Using a portrait and the subject’s own blood, I demonstrate that we are unique, and that we share the DNA that makes us human.
